Mallorca: Pig farming sector not flourishing

23-01-2012 | |

Agricultural Minister Gabriel Company has been cautioned by The Association of Mallorcan Pork Producers (Porci-PIMEM) that pig farming in Mallorca is seeing a decline.

This comes has figures show that 20% of the black pig population has plummeted in 2011.

“Farmers are getting older and younger people are not interested in farming. One needs capital to invest, which in today’s world is not viable,” said Company.

The Mallorcan Black Pig is a smaller pig which means that farmers are asking premium prices for it as it produces lower yields.

There is an expectation that a number of pig farms will shut this year as government subsidies run out.
