UPDATE: African Swine Fever spreading in Russia
African Swine Fever (ASF) is currently spreading in Russia, and reports have stated that the spread cannot be stopped. ASF has now also been noted in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
According to media reports, the disease is moving at a rate of 350 kilometers (217 miles) a year.
No control of the disease
Russia’s agricultural products safety service, Rosselkhoznadzor, has stated that preventive measures are currently being carried out, however, and there seems no be no handle on the control of the diseases’ expansion as there’s no vaccine.

Recent outbreaks were reported to be in the Rostov region on February 10 and in the Nizhny Novgorod region February 18. The last outbreak, the first to be monitored in this region, was found in a backyard farming situation with 20 pigs. Six of them were found infected.
In this same report, five additional outbreaks were reported in the south of Russia, the majority of them being wild boar. One occasion was found in a village containing 19 pigs.
