Pig producers bike in France to fight cancer

18-02-2010 | |

A group of pig producers and prominent members of the Dutch pig industry have taken up the challenge to participate in a mountainous cycling tour in order to gain money for cancer research.

The initiative, called Big Challenge 2010, is being organised in the memory of the late pig producer Herman Houweling, who passed away mid-January and who was suffering from colon cancer. The tour will be held on June 3, 2010.

Part of the Dutch national fundraising action l’Alpe d’Huzes, the tour will take participants to the French Alps, to ascend the famous mountain l’Alpe d’Huez six times. The town is a common and steep stage finish in the annual Tour de France professional cycling tour.

Fundraising
Last year, Houweling himself climbed the mountain twice. He participated in the national action l’Alpe d’Huzes and raised €100,000 for cancer research on his own. For this year, the pig group, which now consists of 26 people, hopes to raise double that amount.

At the moment, almost €60,000 is being generated.

Anyone interested in sponsoring the cyclists can visit the tour’s website, click on any cyclist and make a donation.
