Singapore: H1N1 detected in Indonesian pigs

04-09-2009 | |

Live pigs infected with swine flu have been imported into Singapore from Indonesia but local authorities have isolated the animals to prevent the spread of the virus.

The country’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) said the virus was detected in four pigs imported from Indonesia one week ago and seven more pigs in the Indonesian farm in Pulau Bulan have tested positive from the virus.

The infected pigs have been isolated and the AVA has issued a response to the public that the virus can not by transmitted to humans by handling and eating pork and pork products.

AVA said it will closely work with Indonesian authorities to make sure that pig farms in Pulau Bulan do not export infected animals to Singapore.
