Russia: Restrictions on pork imports removed
Russia plans to remove pork import restrictions imposed due to the H1N1 influenza epidemic, according to Deputy Head of Rosselkhoznadzor (Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance) Nikolai Vlasov.
By Evegen Vorotnikov
Vlasov said that Russia was able to stop the epidemic's advance allowing experts time for the development of a vaccine.
"There is no further sense to restrict the supply of pork in Russia; such recommendations were already given to the government.”
African swine fever
Meanwhile, he says, Russia could face another dangerous infection - African swine fever.
According to Vlasov, because of the disease the population of wild boars in the Stavropol Area decreased from 3.500 to 150 species, while North Ossetia lost all its pigs.
The disease threatens not only wild boars but also domestic pigs.
"If the government does not focus on this issue, the economic damage could exceed EUR 1 billion," says Vlasov.
