Vietnam provinces hit by blue-ear pig epidemic

Almost a thousand pigs have been infected with the blue-ear virus in three Vietnamese provinces, the country’s Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said on Monday.

According to the department the disease infected roughly 50 pigs from two farms in the Northern Province, Quang Ninh. In central province Quang Nam, the virus is plaguing pig farms in 20 communes of four districts, causing the culling of nearly 700 pigs.

The Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu, have also recently experienced cases of the blue-ear virus in 13 pigs. The ministry vows to speed up measures to prevent diseases in livestock this year.
