Quiznos: more pork from crate-free environments
The American Quiznos sandwich chain announced last week it has adopted a new animal-welfare policy for the pork, eggs, and turkey it buys.
Quiznos will buy more pork raised in crate-free environments, more eggs from cage-free chickens, and more turkeys that are killed using a method that the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) described as more humane. The changes will be phased in.
Pork products
About 1% of Quiznos’ pork products this year will be raised in crate-free environments, with a goal of reaching 15% in 2012, under the policy.
About two years ago, fast-food chain Burger King made a similar decision. By state law in the states of Arizona, Florida and California, gestation crates are officially banned.
The Denver, CO-based chain said it came up with the policy in conjunction with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
“We are always trying to find new ways to be better corporate citizens, and we’ll continue to seek those ways,” Quiznos spokesman Joe Hodas said.
