Pig deaths in China attributed to PRRS
The recent deaths of 1,056 pigs in Hongdong county in North China’s Shanxi province were caused by Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome (PRRS), according to Xinhua News Agency.
This weekend, experts went to the scene to conduct autopsies and the lab of the Shanxi provincial centre for animal disease control and prevention reached its diagnosis.
The animals belonged to 65 households in ten villages. About 80% of the deceased animals were less than one month old.
China imported record amounts of pork in 2008 after most probably a disease complex including PRRS depleted domestic supplies in 2007. Since then, the Chinese government has funded incentives that have helped rebuild the national pig herd by expanding large hog operations.
