JBS closer to US pork plant extension

04-12-2009 | |

A special use permit has been granted to JBS Swift & CO putting them a step closer to expanding its pork plant in Marshalltown, Iowa, according to a report by the Times-Republican.

The project reportedly envisions a 150,000-square-foot distribution centre. Still there is an issue about the height of the new facility. JBS originally proposed an 80-foot-high structure, but the city’s current zoning limits the height of buildings to a height of 50 feet.

City officials will now have to decide whether to change the current height restrictions. Otherwise, JBS would have to reduce the height of its expansion. The approval came with certain conditions involving noise levels, security lighting and parking. The project plans will be reviewed by city officials to ensure JBS complies with all city requirements, the report said.
