Russia: ASF pigs slaughtered in Rostov region

In the course of actions to eradicate African swine fever (ASF) in Russia’s Rostov region, it was planned to kill more than 23 000 pigs.

The Southern regional centre of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that 17 705 pigs have already been killed and 5517 are still to be destroyed.

Currently, there are 7 quarantine posts on the border between the Rostov region and the Republic of Kalmykia. In total, 49 quarantine posts and 43 mobile patrols of the traffic police are currently operating throughout the territory of the Rostov region.

Since 29 Sep 2009, 21 cases of ASF have been registered in 5 districts of the Rostov region, namely Konstantinovsky, Morozovsky, Tsimlyansky, Remontnensky, and Veselovsky.

According to preliminary data, the economic loss in the Rostov region, related to ASF, amounts to 46 million rubles (1.6 million USD).
