No slaughter without anaesthetic for pigs

10-04-2008 | |

The EU is not going to make any exceptions in the case of the ritual slaughter of pigs during Christmas in Romania.

It is tradition in Romanian families to slit a pig’s throat without an anaesthetic. However, this tradition goes against EU regulations that stipulate no slaughter of pigs without first administering an anaesthetic.

An investigation by animal welfare organisation, Eurogroup for Animals, showed that many Romanian families were not adhering to EU regulations. The European Commission has called now on the Romanian government to ensure that an end is put to this tradition.

Eurogroup for Animals is extremely pleased with Brussel’s reaction stating that “tradition is not an excuse to make animals suffer unnecessarily.”
