Illinois pork feeds local community

05-12-2008 | |

The Illinois Pork Producers Association, in partnership with Farm Credit Services of Illinois, 1st Farm Credit Services and Effingham/Clay FS elevators, is sponsoring Harvest Feeds at grain elevators around the state. The effort feeds their neighbours and fellow farmers through the free food programme.

IPPA has hosted Harvest Feeds five times with this year being a record-breaker. In total, volunteers from county Pork Producer groups, county Farm Bureaus and local Farm Credit Service agencies cooked and served 10,150 pork sandwiches at 70 grain elevators during September, October and November.

“Illinois pork producers are proud to share their high-quality pork products with other farmers, and we’re glad there is something we can do to help ease the burden of harvest for them,” said Jim Kaitschuk, executive director of the Illinois Pork Producers Association.

Harvest Feeds also provided an opportunity for the pork industry to share some state-specific pork industry facts like the amount of grain consumed by pigs in Illinois. “Grain and livestock producers are part of the agricultural cycle that feeds the world and strengthens the economy here in Illinois,” Kaitschuk adds. “Working together and supporting each other just comes naturally.”
