US: National Pork Board director resigns

Steve Murphy, chief executive officer of the National Pork Board, has resigned, the board announced last week.

Lynn Harrison, president of the 15-member National Pork Board, said in a statement that the board "reluctantly" accepted Murphy's resignation. Murphy was asked to continue in the job until it could find a successor.

Murphy took over as chief executive officer of the National Pork Board after a controversial court challenge to the pork checkoff programmes.

In 2001, the court approved a settlement that ended the National Pork Producer Council's role as general contractor for pork checkoff programmes and returned most of the programmes to the responsibility of the National Pork Board.

Harrison said Murphy built the organisation and staff of the pork board to handle the extra responsibility.

Finding a successor may take up to a year.
