McDonald’s stops pork from castrated piglets
Since January 1, this year, McDonald’s in Belgium is following example in the Netherlands and has stopped selling pork from castrated piglets.
The company’s pork will henceforth be sourced from non-castrated pigs from Great Britain.
In order to prevent the strong smell which can arise while cooking meat from uncastrated animals, the pigs are sent to slaughter at a lower weight. This unpleasant smell appears in around 10% of boars which weigh more than 85kg.
A round table conference is to be organised in Belgium at the beginning of this year in order to investigate possible technical solutions for this problem.
