Dutch pig journalist declared world's best

Pig journalist Marleen van Sleuwen (28), writing for Pig Progress' Dutch sister magazine Boerderij, has won the Star Prize, awarded by the international federation of agricultural journalists (IFAJ).

Van Sleuwen won the writing contest by supplying her article 'Less diseases by culling'. Major aspects in the article are the economic and predominantly ethical sides of euthanising feeble piglets.

The jury appreciated the balanced approach of the controversial subject. Earlier this year, Van Sleuwen won a prize issued by the Dutch association for agri- and horticultural journalists for the same subject.

The prize is awarded this week in Japan, at the IFAJ Congress.

Van Sleuwen contributed to last month's issue of Pig Progress with an overview of ways to anaesthesise male piglets prior to castration.
