Costa Rican pork producers fear competition
Costa Rica is doubting whether to accept the Central America Free Trade
Agreement (CAFTA) because it might lead to fierce competition from US pork
Giving duty-free access to large companies from the US
would put the Costa Ricans out of business, it is feared.
implementation of the agreement will increase access and lower tariffs for many
products from the States in a lot of Middle American countries, according to the
US Meat Export Federation.
The agreement will give US pork duty-free
access to about 1,100 metric tonnes
The Costa Ricans will vote on the
implementation of CAFTA on October 7th of this year.
already ratified the agreement on March 1, last year. This means that Costa Rica
must do so by March 1, 2008.
