CSF test compelled in German region

29-05-2007 | |

The German state of North Rhine Westphalia is the first state to compel immediate research once pigs are discovered that died in suspect circumstances or are suffering from unclear feverish symptoms.

By doing so, the state hopes to prevent a Classical Swine Fever (CSF) outbreak like last year, that also threatened pig production in neighbouring Netherlands.

At this outbreak, authorities had about 100,000 pigs culled.

The research will be part of a warning system, aimed at detecting epidemics in animal herds as early as possible.
