South Korea doubles its US pork imports

South Korea's import of American pork more than doubled over the past three years since beef products were banned due to BSE, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Imports of US beef last year stopped at 581 tons, about 0.2% of what South Korea used to buy before the ban imposed at the end of 2003. But pork import increased 268.5% last year compared to 2003, from 36,079 tons to more than 132,932 tons.

Japan, which also restricted US beef imports, showed the same trend. While beef purchase last year was 16.5% of what if was in 2003, pork imports increased 190%.
