PRRS outbreak in four Vietnamese provinces

The Vietnamese ministry of agriculture and rural development (MARD) has announced an outbreak of PRRS in domestic pigs bred in four provinces in the North of the country.

So far, Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) has affected more than 11,000 pigs in Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh and Thai Binh provinces. The disease originated on farms in Hai Duong.

Many of the animals have died, according to an animal health department report.

Infected pigs sold
About 3,000 infected pigs have already been sold in local markets before farmers were aware of the outbreak.

MARD officials said they hoped to contain the outbreak by burning or burying the bodies of dead animals, while treating afflicted pigs as best they can. Breeding farms will also have to be decontaminated, along with surrounding areas.

Quarantine
In addition, officials are asking farmers to quarantine their animals and stop selling pork or pigs until the outbreak is no longer a threat.

A vaccine is being made available through various agencies for breeders.

More disease prevention and protection plans are being considered.
