Possibly smaller herds for Latvian pig breeders

Increases in feed and other costs could force Latvian pig breeders to reduce the size of their herds, Varis Simanis, chairman of the Latvian Pig Breeders Association, warned.

He said many pig breeders were already experiencing reporting losses, and added that the situation could turn worse in spring when farmers run out of grain stocks.

While grain prices have soared, selling prices for meat have slumped, Simanis claimed. "Whereas last year pork was purchased at €1.08-1.09 per kilogramme, now the purchase price is €0.99-1.02 per kilogramme," he noted.
