British pork exported to Australia
British producers have access to a new market with the approval of exports
to Australia. This results from agreements between the British Pig Executive
(BPEX), Defra, British processing firms and close contacts between the Meat and
Livestock Commission Brussels office and Australian authorities.
The Australian market for imports is large and continues to grow. In 2003,
imports totalled 53,000 mt. In 2005, imports had grown by 25,000 mt, translating
into a total of 78,000 mt of pork imported into Australia.
According to Jean-Pierre Garnier, BPEX export manager, the majority of
Australia's imported pork is currently coming from Denmark and Canada. However,
British pork will soon see its way to Australia. "We are working on a market
analysis at the moment to make sure we target our exports correctly and would
hope to see the first shipments going later on this year."
"The type of cuts they want are mostly those for further processing and it
will be a benefit to British producers.
