Vietnamese retailers increasing pork prices

27-11-2007 | |

Pork prices rose by approximately VND10,000 (US$0.6) last weekend in the large Vietnamese supermarkets – Sai Gon Agriculture Incorporated (S.A.I.) and Vissan.

Both companies were forced to raise prices in response to live-weight pork prices, which have now risen over 30%.

S.A.I. has succeeded in maintaining its market supply to around 7-10 tonnes of fresh pork daily despite the high wholesale prices.

Vissan’s general director, Bui Duy Duc, stated that his company supplies 18 tonnes of pork to supermarkets, restaurants and private businesses and an additional 10 tonnes of frozen pork, which is sold at a rate of 10-15% lower than its fresh pork.

Director of Na Hoi supermarkets, Nguyen Thi Hai, said that distributors had sent official letters to supermarkets suggesting price increases, but that her organisation will continue selling at old prices, adjusting prices for newly received goods.
