German pork entry into China to take time
Talks took place last week in Beijing between German
and Chinese veterinarians to intensify cooperation aiming for market penetration
of German pigmeat and other meat products into the Chinese market, according to
an article by the German Meat Association (Verband der Fleischwirtschaft e.V. -
An entry into the Chinese market is not foreseeable in the short term though.
Yu Taiwei, general director of the Chinese General Administration of Quality
supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), indicated clearly that the
Chinese are awaiting results of reports about the foot and mouth situation and
food safety in Germany before proceeeding further. An inspection of German meat
export companies will also be necessary.
From the German side, the delegation led by Chef Vet
Professor Dr Zwingmann, emphasised the fact that Germany is recognised by the
World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) as now being completely free of foot
and mouth disease among the general pig population. Dr Wille of the German
delegation, explained the situation regarding foot and mouth among wild pigs and
measures to combat it.
Her colleague, Dr Harstick of the VDF, presented the structure of pig
production in Germany and the potential for pigmeat exports. She also invited
the representatives of the AQSIQ to visit pig production facilities in Germany
to see the high standards of quality at first hand
On November 26, a memorandum of
understanding is to be signed in Beijing between both parties: State Secretary
Dr MÃ¼ller and Professor Zwingmann will travel to Beijing.
A second meeting with the Chinese Chief Vet Jia Youling is to take place
shortly. He will present the foot and mouth situation in China.
The German Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection
(BMELV) believes that this memorandum is vital for a successful entry into the
Chinese market for pigmeat. However, it has been acknowledged that the Chinese
will insist on a long diplomatic procedure in the meantime. The road to China is
