UK pig producers in deep trouble

05-10-2007 | |

British pig producers are in grave difficulty, said Barney Kay, general manager of the National Pig Association in the UK, in the Dutch newspaper Agrarisch Dagblad.

Kay said that in addition to high feed costs and low pig prices, the UK producers face the consequences of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), causing transports to be halted for a long time.

Packed
Slaughterhouses and cold stores are packed with meat supplies, he said – producers cannot go anywhere with their animals.

He said he could not confirm the truth of a suggestion by Farmers for Action, that pig producers would be shooting their own piglets from despair.
