EU: subsidy aid for low pig meat prices
The European Union has decided to take action to help
pig producers who are threatened to go out of business due to low prices paid
Slaughterhouses can obtain a subsidy to store pork for a while, until prices
are higher again.
The pig industry is currently facing very low meat prices. Pig feed, however,
is about 35% higher than approximately one year ago.
The European Commission (EC) estimates it will need €40 million to store
about 100,000 tonnes of pork for three to five months.
