EU hints at banning pork and beef from Brazil
Brazil should improve its controls on food safety - otherwise it could risk European import bans, said EU commissioner Markos Kyprianou yesterday in the European Parliament.
Although Kyprianou said that there are no
direct threats for human health, he added that the discrepancies in Brazilian
procedures are so large that sanctions are considered in case the situation does
not improve before the end of the year.
In the last three years, European inspectors
checked the Brazilian situation seven times. The control system proved still to
have many deficiencies - mainly administrative, but the inspectors also found
thin communication lines between vets and several control
Irish and British farmers have been
urging the European Commission (EC) to ban meat from
Kyprianou said for now, this is not
necessary, but he agreed that the EU should continue carrying out checks. For
that reason, new visits of EU experts to Brazil are
planned for next month.
