Danish Pig herd growing at rapid pace

29-10-2007 | |

Figures from the Central Statistics Office in Copenhagen show that the Danish pig herd is growing at a very rapid pace as cited in the Dutch newspaper Agrarisch Dagbladtoday.

As of October 1, the pig population in the stalls amounted to 4 million head – a growth of 8% or 312,000 more than the same period in 2006.

The total pig herd grew to more than 14 million head. The number of sows has remained stable.

Background
Background to this huge growth, is a backlog at the slaughter company Danish Crown as a result of two big fires. It is reported that the company, which usually slaughters 90% of the pigs in its domestic market, is also undergoing employee conflict issues.

To solve the capacity problem, Danish Crown has sold some pigs to the German slaughter industry with 60 loads per week next month being transported instead of the current 50.
