Olymel makes final offer to keep plant open
Canadian pork producer Olymel has given unionised workers until tomorrow to decide whether to accept an offer that would keep a plant in Quebec open.
Earlier this month, 1,100 unionised workers at the plant voted 99% against a contract offer containing wage and benefit concessions.
Closure
In December 4th, Olymel announced the closure of two other Quebec plants next year, cutting almost 560 jobs, as the industry restructures due to global competition and a strong Canadian dollar.
Olymel accounts for 60% of Quebec pork production and employs 11,000 people at plants in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. The company ships about half its production to the US, Japan and Australia.
