Increase in Russian pig breeding

The number of pigs in Russia has been growing rapidly in the last twelve months.

At August 1, the number of pigs in Russia was 15.7 million, an increase of 6.9%, compared with a year earlier, the Russian agricultural ministry said.
Pig breeding is expanding in Russia, with many investments going into brand new farms. The cattle industry is showing the opposite tendency as beef production is not as profitable as pig breeding. The number of cows fell by 4.9% to 9.6 million.
The number of sheep and goats on August 1 was 21 million, a 4.1% rise year-on-year.
Russia's total slaughter of cattle, pigs and poultry for meat in January-July increased by 3.9%, compared with the corresponding period last year, to 3.7 million metric tonnes.
