3,400 pigs die in Minnesota barn fire

About 3,000 piglets and 400 sows were killed in a barn fire in one of the largest pig complexes in Minnesota, US last week.

It is estimated that the losses at the Holden Farms site are at about $2 million for the barn and over $150,000 for the dead animals.

The cause of the fire appeared accidental. Holden Farms is known for using strict biosecurity and modern equipment.

Smoke inhalation

A fire brigade spokesman said that by the time firefighters arrived, many of the piglets and sows had died of smoke inhalation, although firefighters could still hear squealing, far away.

When the roof caved in, they knew they could not save neither barn nor pigs, he told.
