Pig farmers seek compensation after ASF

Over €50 million was lost due to the recent African Swine Fever (ASF) epidemic that ravaged Nigerian pig industry.

President of the Pig Farmers Association of Lagos State (PFALS), Lady Oyelayo Akintola, revealed this amount of money in a one-day seminar held in Oko Oba, Agege, Lagos.

Akintola noted that the affliction discouraged many pig farmers. She said that the ASF scourge had caused a lot of members to pull out of the business. It has killed over one million pigs.

Devastated

"Do you know so many of our members died during this period, because some of them invested their pensions and gratuities into the business but after the devastation they were left with nothing?"

She, however, observed that the seminar was exposing them to the best ways of keeping records, so that if there is any devastation they could give accurate figures and records of losses incurred.

Lagos State commissioner of agriculture and co-operatives, Chief Kaoli Olusanya, said although pig farmers ought to have been compensated, nothing is forthcoming yet. He promised that the ministry will still continue to demand for the compensation.
