Pig industry grants announced

Iowa attorney general Tom Miller announced that grant funds totaling $1 million over the next ten years are available for projects that advance and enhance pig production in Iowa, US.

Smithfield Foods is paying $100,000 per year for ten years for the programme.
 
The attorney general‘s office, in collaboration with Smithfield and two legislators, will evaluate proposals and award $100,000 before the end of this year to projects that demonstrate financial need and will promote pig production in Iowa in an innovative manner.
 
Themes
Proposals, aimed at themes like the environment, profitability, contract feeding, independent producers and market information, can be sent in until December 1, 2006.
 
Smithfield also agreed to pay $1,000,000 to Iowa State University for a ten-year environmental training programme, and $240,000 over a four-year period to fund Smithfield-Luter Scholarships at Iowa State University.
