PSF pigmeat to Russia after all

03-10-2006 | |

Contrary to earlier reports, US Premium Standard Farms pork is allowed to be transported into Russia.

Pork from PSF is only allowed into Russia for further processing, but cannot be sold in retail.

Last week, the Russian federal veterinarian and phytosanitary service banned PSF pork on the condition that the company would not comply with Russian veterinary-sanitary requirements.

It appears now this is not the case. The PSF plant in Missouri is not able any more to deliver meat for retail market.

Great impact

A total import ban would have had a great impact on PSF, a large producer and processor of pigs, having 221,000 sows and about 4.6 million pigs slaughtered on a yearly basis. Recently the company was sold to Smithfield.
