Occurrence: Worldwide
Age affected: Gilts, sows
Causes: Mismanagement; fever; reproductive tract and systemic infections; poisoning
Effects: Abortion is the expulsion of recognisable foetuses before day 110 of gestation, after which production of dead foetuses is classified as stillbirth. The aborted material must be seen for a record to be made, as abortion can be overlooked unless the progress of pregnancy is being carefully monitored. Sows may be visibly ill before abortion occurs or remain normal.
