Ukraine and Germany have recently signed a memorandum regarding the joining of efforts in the struggle against the spread of African swine fever (ASF) in Europe.
The document has been signed by the First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Ivan Bisyuk and the President of the OIE Dr Karin Shvabenbauer (Germany), stated the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.
According to Ivan Bisyuk, Ukraine has made significant progress in the fight against ASF. So far this year there has not been one outbreak of the disease reported in the country, despite the fact that work of the State veterinary service as well as almost all other government agencies have been affected by the political crisis.
This agreement includes the implementation of veterinary medicine expert exchange, mutual support and professional development of a network of diagnostic laboratories. Also during the meeting the possible expansion of the Agreement in three directions: development of risk assessment, development of a national network of diagnostic laboratories, and the development of strategies for containing of the ASF in wildlife and small-farms, was discussed.
The agreement is an extension of the 2004 Agreement on Cooperation in the area of veterinary medicine, which was proposed by Chief Veterinary Officer of Germany, Karin Shvabenbauer.
