Russia restricts pork and live pig transportation

Starting 2014 Russia has implemented a number of new rules on transportation of all pork and pork products in the country that have been developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Russian veterinary watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor to improve the struggle against African Swine Fever (ASF).

In accordance with the new project the farmers could not further transport pork or live pigs by themselves. A number of logistic firms will be created with a special state accreditation that will carry out the transportation of these products.

"This is one of the most effective tools to combat African Swine Fever along with the shooting of wild boars. The disease often spreads 200-300 km from the epicenter of the outbreaks  via automotive transport," said CEO of National Meat Association Yuri Kovalev.

Farmers, in turn, are not very pleased with the news about the new law. According to them the fight against ASF is just a cover for the large pork producers to push out small producers from the market. Experts also estimated that the use of logistic firms for pork transportation could increase the cost of pork production by 20-30%.
