A new outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported this week in Russia according to Rosselhoznadzor.
According to the report on 4 August a private farm in Markin village, October district of Rostov the death of pigs has been reported. Studies conducted in the Rostov Regional Veterinary Laboratory have shown the presence of ASF.
The farm contained 44 pigs. According to the instruction Rosselhoznadzor has to cull and burn pigs within 5 km of the outbreaks. So far the veterinary specialists has culled and destroyed 414 pigs. Governor Vyacheslav Vasilenko of the region has called for pig farmers to turn to alternative forms of animal husbandry.
“Today, the owners of private farms and farmers need to recognise the threat and stop pig breeding,” he said.
So far there have been outbreaks of ASF reported in 14 different regions both among wild boar and domestic pigs this year. These include cases in North Ossetia-Alania, Voronezh, Rostov, Volgograd, Tver, Tambov, Saratov, Belgorod, Smolensk, Moscow, Pskov, Yaroslavl, Tula and Krasnodar Regions.
