Pork prices in Russia projected to fall

In 2013 pork prices in Russia are projected to fall 2.3% year-to-year and will continue to decline in the future, according to the head of the National Pork Producers Union, Yuri Kovalev.

Reduced prices is due to the intensive growth of the country's own production and the displacement of imported products on the Russian market. According to Kovalev, since 2005 pork production in Russia increased 5.5 times, while for the 10 months of 2013 the level of growth of industrial pig production has been amounted to 28% on year-to-year comparison.

Kovalev says that with self-sufficiency in pork production, the prices will continue to decrease. However, one of the major factors that are limiting these processes according to Kovalev is the continuation of the spread of African Swine Fever.

From 2007 to 2013 African Swine Fever destroyed millions of pigs. A spokesperson for Rosselkhoznadzor  said, "we could already almost completely refuse to import by now."
