African Swine Fever gains momentum in Ukraine

A new outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been found in Rivne Oblast, the central part of Ukraine, reported local veterinary services.

The disease was detected in two wild boars which were found four kilometers away from the border with Belarus.

A week ago an outbreak of ASF was reported in Chernihiv Oblast at one of the local pig farms. To constrain the spread of the disease local veterinary services had to cull and burn nearly 2,000 pigs.

The Dubrovytsia Raion region has been quarantined with complete prohibition to sell pork at local markets and export pork to neighbouring regions. Local hunters already announced that they plan to shoot all wild boars in the area where the disease has spread.

"African Swine Fever is not dangerous for people. However, when the disease appears in the inhabited territory, livestock will die if there are no restrictions," stated Vladimir Lazarchuk, the head of veterinary medicine department of Rivne Oblast, explaining the necessity of quarantine measures.

Also on July 5 an outbreak has been reported in in Kiev Oblast at a local farm and in Zhitomir Oblast among wild boars. There is still a lack of information about these outbreaks.
