  • Special to this facility is the fact that it hardly smells - even visitors can walk away not smelling of pigs at all.

  • Key to this is an 'atomisation' system, hanging from the ceiling, sending a special spray on top of the pigs every four hours for about five seconds. The spray is a blending of corn oil into a water formulation including alcohol, citric acid, eucalyptus and vanilla.

  • Two more control systems, both below the slats, complete the odour control approach. One sprays the same spray right on top of the manure; the other injects a proprietary substance straight into the manure.

  • One of the family business' three breeding facilities is located several miles down the road. In total, the Juergens business produces 7,000 sows – yielding some 165,000 piglets. Sows produce 27 pigs/ sow/ year. About 13,000 are grown up in total by the Juergens brothers, the rest is grown by contract farmers.

  • Juergens' main feed facility is located in Carroll. Here 54,000 metric tonnes of feed in 2010, equivalent to $1.75 million sales. Virtually all feed produced is swine feed – about 20% is used on their own facilities.
