Canada: Competitive advantage for swine exporters

Dave MacKenzie, Member of Parliament for Oxford, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, announced an investment of over $1 million to the Canadian Swine Exporters Association (CSEA) to help boost international recognition of Canada’s superior purebred swine genetics.

This investment will help CSEA members increase awareness of the value and quality of Canadian swine by participating in key international trade shows and leading targeted trade missions. It will also ensure that Canada remains a world leader in swine genetics, particularly in attributes that improve meat quality, feed efficiency, environmental issues, and biosecurity.

• Created in 1980, the Canadian Swine Exporters Association supplies the finest Canadian swine breeding stock, fresh and frozen semen as well as technology, training and consultation.

• Canada is the third-largest pork exporter in the world, with sales of over $3.6 billion to more than 100 countries worldwide.

• The trade agreement between Canada and the European Union will significantly boost trade and investment ties. Once fully implemented, this agreement will give Canadian farmers yearly duty-free access for up to 80,000 tonnes of pork.

• This investment is made through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s AgriMarketing Program, a five-year, $341-million initiative under Growing Forward 2.

“Canada’s swine producers play a key role in creating jobs and prosperity for Canadian farm families, and this investment will go a long way in helping our swine export industry showcase top-quality Canadian genetics around the world, seize new market opportunities, and increase profits for our pork producers,” stated Member of Parliament Dave MacKenzie.
