AMI comment: FSIS import inspection rules

AMI and other associations commented this week on the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) proposed changes to imported product inspection standards.

The proposed changes will facilitate implementation of the electronic Public Health Information System (PHIS) by removing unnecessary or duplicative application requirements on meat importers and foreign authorities. AMI is supportive of the proposed changes, noting in its comments that the proposed changes “will serve to modernize FSIS’s import inspection process and reduce regulatory burdens.”

In addition, AMI requested FSIS continue to provide flexibility to importers that have chosen not to utilize the PHIS import system, ensuring their products will continue to receive prompt inspection upon arrival at U.S. ports of entry. The full comment letter is available here.
