Taiwan: US ractopamine pork imports under separate licence

14-06-2012 | | |

In the latest development of the US-Taiwan ractopamine dispute, the Taiwanese government has announced that it will be separating the permits for importing pork and beef, if it decides to allow in the US ractopamine-fed beef.

Separate permits are only a part of a larger proposal for new guidelines: beef imports will be clearly labelled, a restriction on internal organ import, and a standard for allowable ractopamine in beef.

The Obama administration has been under pressure by US lawmakers who have been urging the government to pursue a solution that would allow both beef and pork imports containing ractopamine.

How the domestic pig farmers, who were prevented from using ractopamine in feed 10 years ago, are reacting to the news is unknown.
