Sunsing Farm is one of Shanghai Province's larger breeding farms as Pig Progress editor, Vincent ter Beek, found out on his visit to China. Pig farming in the vicinity of a metropolis comes with opportunities and responsibilities.

    The Donghai bridge is a famous 32 km construction, connecting Shanghai port with a cargo island, for very large ships. Where the bridge hits China’s mainland, Sunsing farm can be found.

    The main building of the breeding farm is situated near a town called Laogang, south of Shanghai. The farm is going through a major expansion process, more than doubling its output from 4,200 sows to 8,600 sows.

    At the existing facility, visitors cannot enter any farm buildings. Instead, an extensive monitoring system is being used to offer visitors and potential gilt buyers a look inside.

    The current facility operates at an average of 19 piglets/sow/year. Since there is a strong demand to commercially produced gilts, profits are good. Gilts are sold at 60-65 kg.

    Gilts are being transported to small and medium sized farms all over China – even to North Eastern China or to the island of Hainan in the south.

    At the new farm location, a stretch of land of 30 x 10 km near the ocean, a couple of buildings have already been completed. Eventually, the new breeding farm will be a three-site complex for 4,400 sows.

    Essential for the farm is the addition of a biogas plant, to deal with the waste of the swine. All water, faeces and urine will be washed away and processed.

    The new site will be completed in 2015. It will include a boar stud, GGP and GP buildings, as well as buildings for growing gilts.
